Welcome! I am an elementary science specialist. What does that mean you ask? My job is pretty much 3-fold. The most important part of my job is teaching science. I teach kindergarten through fifth grade science. We have a co-teaching model so the classroom teachers bring their students down to the science lab where we team teach (more on this later). The second part of my job includes providing professional development for the elementary classroom teachers within my school and district. Some of this occurs "formally" in workshops, planning sessions, or individual teacher meetings, but much of it happens in the moment while we are working together in the lab where teachers have the opportunity to improve their content knowledge and science teaching methods. The third part of my job is overseeing the K-5 curriculum, ensuring that we have covered the NGSS to the best of our abilities.
There are other little "extras" too, of course. I coordinate our school Science Fair, and help with the district fair, manage the outdoor garden area, get phone calls to help catch birds in the building, rabid bats outside, etc. What can I say - I never really know what my days will look like, and I love that about my job!
I realize that my job is quite unique. There are not very many people who get to teach elementary science kindergarten-fifth grade. I decided to start this blog as a way to share my experiences with elementary teachers who are looking for ideas, advice, or support, as well as for our Captain families who want to keep tabs on what is happening in Captain science!
Happy Science!
Welcome! I am an elementary science specialist, which means I teach K-5 science, provide professional development for elementary classroom teachers, and oversee the K-5 curriculum to ensure our students get the best science experience possible! This blog is set up to keep our Captain families up-to-date on what is happening in science, and to provide a place for elementary teachers to get ideas, support, answered questions, etc. Please let me know if there is a way I can help support you!
